Dr. Julián Esparza Romero

He is a tenured research professor at CIAD in Hermosillo, where he leads the Obesity and Diabetes Research Unit. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree in science from CIAD, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical-biological sciences from the University of Sonora. A Level II member of the National System of Researchers, his work focuses on obesity, type 2 diabetes, and associated risk factors, particularly in Indigenous communities such as the Pima, Seri, and Yaqui peoples. He has conducted research on biological, environmental, and sociocultural determinants of chronic disease and supported community interventions to promote healthy lifestyles. He has authored over one hundred scientific publications, teaches epidemiological methods at CIAD, and currently serves as president of the College of Public Health Professionals of Sonora.
